Yes and no. If you or your group are traveling to the parks that are most popular (think Serengeti, Maasai Mara, or Ngorongoro) then using us will be very competitive to anyone else or a self planned trip. We work closely with specific drivers and a broad range of accommodations to provide the most affordable plan for you.
If you or your group desire a safari that is more secluded (think Katavi or Mahale Mountains) then it could potentially be cheaper to DIY. Tanzania is very well set up for travel to its most popular parks the same is untrue for others. These parks are difficult to get to and planning is significantly more complex. If you’re traveling from a country where yellow fever is endemic, you’ll be required to have a yellow fever vaccine card. In addition to yellow fever, there are a few other vaccines that are worth considering. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are both foodborne illnesses that can be contracted in Tanzania, so it’s a good idea to ensure you’re up-to-date on these vaccines. Additionally, being current on your Tetanus vaccine is always a smart move.
Malaria is also a concern in Tanzania, and many travelers choose to take an antimalarial medication as a preventative measure. It’s also wise to pack a round of antibiotics for unexpected illnesses or infections.

It really depends on what you’re hoping to see and experience during your trip. From our experience traveling there, we found that the dry season from June to October is a great time for wildlife viewing, as the animals tend to gather around watering holes and are easier to spot in the dry vegetation. Plus, this is when the wildebeest migration takes place in Serengeti National Park, typically from June to July with river crossings happening in August and September. However, if you’re interested in birdwatching or seeing newborn animals, you might want to consider the wet season from November to May, the wildebeest calving on the plains is from January to April. It’s important to note that Tanzania is a big country with a lot of diversity, so if you have a specific park or region you want to visit please don’t hesitate to reach out for advice if needed.
Some people are satisfied with a short 2-3 day safari, while others prefer to stay longer and explore more of the parks and wildlife. From our experience traveling there, we recommend a minimum of 4-5 days to truly experience the magic of Tanzania’s national parks. This gives you enough time to see a variety of wildlife and landscapes, and to really immerse yourself in the safari experience. Of course, if you have more time and are looking for a more in-depth adventure, you can always extend your trip or combine multiple parks into one itinerary.
There are a variety of safaris available, from game drives in a safari vehicle to walking safaris and even hot air balloon rides. If you’re planning to do a game drive safari, you won’t need to be in peak physical condition, as you’ll be comfortably seated in a vehicle for most of the time. However, if you’re interested in a walking safari or other more physically demanding activities, you should be in good health and able to walk for several hours at a time.
